Why the stump is its own job

A removal crew's saws stop at ground level; below that it's a machine's problem. A grinder chews the stump and its flare into chips, typically six to twelve inches below grade — deep enough to seed grass, plant a bed, or stop hitting it with the deck every Saturday. In Marion County yards the usual customers are freshly cut ash stumps, the wide low stumps of storm-lost silver maples, and the old gray ones that came “free” with the house and have anchored a weed colony ever since.

Left alone, a stump is slower trouble: oak and maple stumps sucker stubbornly, the rotting root mass invites carpenter ants and fungus, and a proud stump in the lawn is a mower strike waiting to happen. Grinding closes the account.

What the quote will ask

Three things set a grinding price: the stump's diameter measured at the widest point of the flare, how many there are — multiples on one visit price well — and access. Most grinders roll through a 36-inch gate; open Palmyra and Monroe City backyards are the easy version, while a stump behind a Hannibal retaining wall or down a bluff-side yard may need the walk-behind machine and more time. Say what's buried nearby if you know it: irrigation, a dog fence, the old clothesline pad. On any grind that goes deep near marked utilities, the 811 locate call is the cheap insurance Missouri's dig law exists for.

Chips can stay heaped in the hole as fill, be spread as mulch, or be hauled with the rest of the debris — three different lines on the quote, so choose before the machine starts. If the tree is still standing, price the whole sequence at once: removal quoted for Marion County plus the grind beats two separate mobilizations.

Stumps are the most predictable line on this page, and even they hide surprises: diameter at grade, how far the flare runs, and whatever the teeth find below — river-town lots have a long memory for buried brick, clothesline anchors, and old fence footings. A photo and a tape measure are usually enough for a firm free quote, and firm beats a table every time.

Measure it, snap it, send it. Most stump quotes come back from a photo alone.
